The Scottish Parliament passed a law on Thursday morning making it a criminal offence for parents to smack their children (Morning Star 4/10/19).
The Children (Equal Protection from Assault) Bill was proposed by Green MSP John Finnie.
Finnie referred to the increasing awareness of the "long term effects of physical punishment on children" and said the Bill aimed to bring Scotland "into line with what appears to becoming international standard."
The Scottish Government welcomed the Bill. Children's Minister Maree Todd said it brought "much needed clarity."
The Bill was passed by 84 votes to 29. it won support from all parties except the Conservatives.
