Britain has the fifth richest economy in the world.
Yet it is also a state where millions live in poverty.
In 2008 the Trussell Trust handed out 26000 food parcels.
Last year this had risen to 1.33 million...a 5000% increase in 10 years.
Worse still this reliance on food aid increases by over 20% during the school holidays.
Indeed it is estimated that up 1 million children in Britain suffer from "holiday hunger."
And UN Rapporteur on extreme poverty Professor Philip Alston, who visited Britain, described the child poverty he saw as "not just a disgrace but a social calamity and a social disaster."
The Scottish Republican Socialist Movement says all this shows how divided and unequal Britain is today. We want to build an independent Scotland that is egalitarian and unjust. Join us in that fight.
