The Irish Government has published referendum legislation on the extension of voting rights to the Irish abroad.
If passed it will allow Irish citizens living outside of the state to cast votes in Presidential elections.
It would come into effect in time for the next Presidential vote which is due in 2025.
Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has welcomed the publication saying that the Irish in the north of Ireland and around the world have "waited too long already for such rights" (Irish Post 28/9/19).
She noted that such rights are the "norm in other jurisdictions."
Indeed 30 other European countries already allow non-resident citizens to vote in elections.
