It is now over 40 years since Margaret Thatcher became PM. But what happened in Scotland in the 1979 General Election?
The truth is that in Scotland Labour actually did rather well. It INCREASED its share of the vote from 36.% (October 1974) to 41.5% and took 44 seats. It did particularly well in the west of Scotland taking Teddy Taylor's Cathcart seat for instance.
The Tories also saw their share of the vote go up from 24.4% to 31.4% and took 22 seats.
The SNP however took something of a hammering losing nine of their 11 seats and seeing their share shrink from 30.4% to 17.3%.
At the UK level the Tories had 43.9% and 339 seats, an overall majority of 43. Labour got 36.9% and the Liberals 13.8%.
